Orthodontics for Adults: Is It Too Late for Braces?

“Am I too old for this?” is the most common question in orthodontic consultations. The short answer: there is no age limit as long as gum and bone are healthy. Tooth movement is a biological process that continues in adulthood.

What is different in adults

  • Movement is somewhat slower (often 20–30% longer).
  • With a skeletal discrepancy, moving teeth alone may not suffice; advanced cases may need surgical support.
  • Existing fillings, crowns and gum condition directly shape the plan.

Duration

6–12 months for simple crowding; 18–30 months for moderate to advanced cases. The exact figure follows examination and X-rays.

Aligners or braces?

Clear aligners

Invisible, removable and easy to clean — but must be worn 20–22 hours a day. Highly successful in mild to moderate, aesthetically driven cases.

Braces

More predictable for complex movements and independent of patient compliance. Ceramic brackets reduce visibility considerably.

After treatment: retention

The most frequently skipped stage. Teeth need a retainer to stay in their new position — for adults, usually nightly wear indefinitely. Without it, teeth drift back and treatment must be repeated.

Orthodontics is not only cosmetic

Crowded teeth are hard to clean, raising decay and gum disease risk. Bite problems can cause wear, jaw joint pain and headaches.
