Scientific Background: Two Centuries of Dental Ceramics
1789 — The porcelain tooth. The French pharmacist Alexis Duchâteau and the dentist Nicolas Dubois de Chémant developed porcelain dentures to replace the ivory and animal teeth used until then. Porcelain did not smell, stain or degrade in the mouth.
1903 — The porcelain jacket crown. Charles Land described the first porcelain crown covering the whole tooth. It was aesthetic but brittle, which is why metal-supported crowns remained the standard for many years.
1975 — Transformation toughening. A study by Garvie and colleagues in Nature, titled "Ceramic Steel?", showed that zirconia changes its crystal structure at the tip of a crack and halts its progress. That is the scientific reason zirconia entered dentistry.
1991 — IPS Empress. This leucite-reinforced glass ceramic allowed crowns without a metal core to transmit light in a way close to a natural tooth. Zirconia leads on strength, glass ceramic on translucency.
Which one, and when?
Strength is decisive in the posterior region where chewing forces are high; translucency matters most at the front. There is therefore no single "best material" — the choice depends on the position of the tooth, the condition of the opposing teeth and the gum level.
