Well-planned zirconium crowns last for many years. But the answer to “how long” depends less on the crown itself than on the health of the tooth and gum beneath it.
Average lifespan
With good hygiene and regular check-ups, zirconium crowns typically serve 10–15 years. Zirconium itself does not decay or discolour; replacement is almost always driven by new decay in the underlying tooth or gum recession.
What shortens it
- Grinding and clenching — a night guard is essential in bruxism.
- Plaque at the crown margin — where decay begins if cleaning is neglected.
- Biting hard objects — ice, nutshells, pens.
Daily care
- Twice daily with a soft brush and fluoride paste
- Floss once daily; superfloss or interdental brushes with bridges
- Professional cleaning and check-up every six months
If the gum recedes
Because zirconium contains no metal, the grey line seen with metal-supported porcelain does not appear. Still, exposed root surface carries sensitivity and decay risk and should be assessed promptly.
When to replace
A visible gap at the margin, recurring sensitivity, fracture or colour mismatch calls for examination. Early action usually means replacing only the crown; delay can lead to root canal treatment or tooth loss.
